Steve Heller's Fabulous Furniture and Sculptures

Steve Heller has always felt a need to create ever since he was young. Starting around age 14, Heller has taught himself woodwork and how to build cars. The first car he bought with money he earned from his paper distributing job, he took it apart and built it up again. “He never looked back.”

Heller first opened his shop Fabulous Furniture in 1973, when he bought a rundown motel in Boiceville, NY. It was the perfect place for him: “It was cheap, it had two acres of land, a lot of little out buildings, and no neighbors,” Heller said. It was perfect for him to make as much noise with his machinery as he can.

Since then, he has continued to create many different items: live-edge wooden furniture, metal sculptures ranging from dinosaurs, spaceships, aliens, and robots, and custom cars. With the help of his partner-in-crime Mike Karpf who works alongside him in the workshop, his wife Martha Frankel who deals with the business management side of things, and lastly, his beloved dog Daisy who sticks by his side, Heller has a village of support.

Heller is often restless with many ideas for projects flooding his head.

“I wish I lived on Venus, where they have a 47 hour day. You know, 'cause, there's never enough time in the day for me. Sometimes I have to come in and do it. I'm obsessed,” Heller said.

In this video, Heller talked about his experiences with woodwork and building his sculptures, projects like his first robots, collecting his materials, believing in aliens, and more. I visited Heller at his showroom, where many of his creations are displayed for sale. Later on he took me around his workshop and showed me his current projects as well as his endless collection of materials.
